2013 UMS Band Interviews #2

Esme Patterson

Where/ When are you playing for the UMS?
playing on friday 7pm at 3 kings

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.
we play melodically-driven folk and roll from outer and inner space.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
oh that's embarrasing. i think it was 98 degrees, the 90's boy band.

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
i really liked the new Phosphorescence album, and Kendrick Lamar's new record too.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
keep a core of patience in your heart, but work and create furiously.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
UMS is always exciting for me to see all of my favorite local bands in one weekend, hear how they're evolving, see who's really stepping up their game. i'm particularly looking forward to Kitty Crimes, the Blue Rider, Shenandoah Davis (a great musician from seattle), and i'm excited to see Vitamins reunited! i'm probably just gonna wander around and see what sounds good!

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
wild, inspiring, sweaty

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
it's kind of all run together over the years, one big sweaty, (perhaps inebriated), good time.

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
wear a hat and drink lots of water, the sun can be brutal.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?
i love thai monkey club on bayaud and broadway. really spicy tom kha soup! my favorite.

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
i love Ironwood and Boss Vintage.

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
kingdom of magic, sadly not together anymore

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his music collection.  What three albums would you recommend?
nas - illmatic, charles ives - holiday symphony, joni Mitchell - hejira

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
just wander around! there is something strange and beautiful happening at every moment somewhere, i find that the most amazing things i find you just gotta stumble across by surprise.

WhiteCatPink

Where/ When are you playing for the UMS?
I am playing at 4 pm at Eslinger Gallery on Saturday, July 20 for the UMS.

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.
You will see a giant White Cat playing Electronic European Glitch and Glam on the drums with girl kitties dancing.  Think Ziggy Stardust meets Kraftwerk.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
The first music I used my own money to buy was Men At Work Business as Usual on tape when it was first released in 1982.

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
My favorite album of 2013 so far is Mice Parade Candela.  Did I say 'mice'?

Do you have any advice for new bands?
For new bands, I would say:  Don't be a dick, either to the venue you are playing at, or to other bands.  Show up on time or a little early for a gig.  Promotional people like that.  The sound person is your best friend.  Treat him or her as such, and remember that he or she can make or break your sound.  Support the bands you like, and be active in that vein.  Be 100% true to who you are.  Don't sell out.  Following the crowd will get you more of the same.  Be different, and be noticed.  Have fun!  You are doing this because you love it, so tear it up!

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
I have not planned a schedule of whom I want to see, but In The Whale is a definite highlight.

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
FUN.  EXPOSURE.  DIFFERENT.

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
The most memorable experience has been mingling and milling around with the crowds as a giant White Cat.

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
Just try to hang out and see other bands you like and mingle with people, make friends and connections.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?
The Cat has his own kibble.

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
My favorite shop is The Crypt.

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
My favorite Colorado band is 9 Volt Fatale.

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his music collection.  What three albums would you recommend?
I would recommend Kraftwerk Man Machine, Serge Gainsbourg Histoire De Melody Nelson, and Brian Eno Before And After Science.

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
Q.  'What do you sound like?"  A.  Like David Bowie got on a spaceship with Kraftwerk manning the controls while Serge Gainsbourg entertains a party on the ship with a bunch of French models.

Weird Al’s greatest hits.

Intronaut Habitual Levitations

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Practice, Patience, Record, support local bands you already like, keep contacts with these bands, harass the hell out of promoters until they give you a show, the worst they can say is no, ask your favorite local bands to play a show with them and harass them too. Again, the worst they can say is no.

Nope. Thanks!

Mile High Soul Club

Where/ When are you playing for the UMS?
Mile High Soul Club Sat, July 20 4:40 pm Side Stage at Goodwill

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard you DJ might expect from your performance at UMS this year.
They never knew that they liked soul & funk so much.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
I've got a reputation as a music snob to maintain so I can't answer that question honestly.

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
While it's not soul, the SULK album Graceless should be in any Madchester,
Brit-Pop loving fan’s collection. Amazing it's come out in this age. As far as soul goes, Booker T just released something and my MHSC co-founder Dog Boy is really into Nikki Hill at the moment.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Man, enough with the beards and acoustic guitars. You're just another hair in a giant collective beard at this point.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
No plan. Just pop in everywhere I can.

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
I've got a ton of them. Bardo, IndyInk, Mutiny, Boss, Fancy Tiger... there's a ton of great places.

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
I know too many of them. Don't want to leave anyone out. Many great acts in this city.

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his
music collection.  What three albums would you recommend?
For the purposes of this I'm going to assume they want to expand their soul
and funk collection:
Tyler: Otis Redding - Otis Blue
Creeper Steve: Mel & Tim - Good Guys Only Win in The Movies.
DJ DogBoy: Booker T and the MG's - Soul Dressing or the Complete Stax/Volt
Singles

Allout Helter

(Since the lineup just got announced, here are the answers from me (Ross Hostage, singer) for Allout Helter)

Where/ When are you playing for the UMS?
We'll be at Brandon's 404 at 8pm on Saturday, 7/20

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.
Loud. Fast. Awesome. Thrash. Party.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
The first cassette I ever bought with my own money (meaning allowance money) was Nirvana Nevermind when it came out. I've been making loud, noisy music ever since

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
That's a tough question! What day is it?

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Be nice, be gracious, be fun.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
Since the lineup just got announced, I'll have to put together my schedule but I'd say 404 will be a great place for killer punk rock on Saturday. I'll be playing with Calder's Revolvers, as well, but, beyond that, I plan on catching as many sets as possible, whether I've heard of a band or not.

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
Camaraderie, sweaty, music.

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
My favorite moments have just been sharing drinks and good music with this fantastic community. It'd be impossible to single out one experience since all four days every year are nothing but outrageous and spontaneous fun.

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
Stay hydrated, tip well, see as many bands as possible.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?
Can't wait to stop by the new Illegal Pete's! Last year, I had some amazing street food and that's pretty much what I'm hoping will sustain me with rock fuel.

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
Mutiny Now! is currently the front-runner. New business with solid old-school ideals.

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
"All Time" is a tough call. I think the first show I went to when I moved to Colorado in 2001 was Pinhead Circus, The Gamits and The Fairlanes at Tulagi's in Boulder. That era of Colorado punk was pretty awesome but now I've come to know and enjoy so many Colorado musicians across various genres that it'd be impossible to choose just one. I might be biased but I'll just say this: Colorado has my favorite music scene, hands down.

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his music collection. What three albums would you recommend?
Propagandhi Supporting Caste, Elvis Costello This Year's Model, anything by The Slackers.

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
Just keep an open mind. I'm mainly involved in the Denver punk scene but UMS is a great opportunity to expand my horizons every year and find new music. Thanks for the support, Twist & Shout!

2012 UMS Band Interviews #4

Click the link below for complete info about venues, performers, and times for 2012's UMS!
The UMS July 19th-22nd South Broadway
John Common And Blinding Flashes Of Light
Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
Friday, 7/20 11PM Moe's BBQ 530 Broadway Denver, CO. It's going to be rather special.

How long has your band been together?
John - It's all a blur. More than a year, less than 4 years. Or maybe since 1987. A minute.

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?
John - I can't recall.
Evan - It had something to do with the Oriental Theater and a projection screen.
Jon  - I also think it may have been at the Oriental.  I remember a giant screen that was projecting images that looked like a brain, and we were wearing suits.  It was like watching a surgery I suppose.

What was the first album you purchased?
John - The Police Outlandos D'Amour
Nate - Soundgarden Superunknown
Jess - The Flashdance soundtrack.
Jon - Purchased?  Probably Led Zeppelin II

What album was your most recent purchase?
John - I bought Elvis Costello's entire catalog recently.
Evan - I bought Esperanza Spalding's latest, Chamber Music Society
Nate - 12 Rods' Split Personalities
Jess - Low.
Jon - Brad Mehldau Trio, Ode

Do you have any advice for new bands?
John - Don't do this. It's a trap. Get out now. Can I borrow 10 bucks? Are you going to eat that? Also, next time you hear "warm, fat tone" punch him in the mouth.
Evan - Never buy an RV to tour in.  If it breaks down, you are so limited on where you can get it serviced that the foldout bed just never pays off.  Put together an inventory of all of your gear, including serial #'s and photos, then insure it.
Nate - Practice, practice, practice.  Then practice after that
Jess - Be present through each musical experience. Really enjoy it while you're in it. Make art you believe in. Breathe. Be open to learning more about yourself.
Jon - Great musicians are easy to find, great people who are great musicians aren't as easy.  Play with people you love, never forget to have fun. And practice your art, not your image.

Besides your own band - who do you want to see at the UMS?
Evan - Achille Lauro, Cowboy Indian Bear, DJ Savior Breath, Dragondeer, Fairchildren, Fierce Bad Rabbit, Glowing House, Holophrase, Ian Cooke, Land Lines, Paper Bird, Soundrabbit, The Changing Colors, The Swayback...  And whatever sounds good pouring out into the street.
Jess - What Evan said.
Jon - Large numbers of attentive people loving our set and having fun.

Best past UMS experience?
John - We played the outdoor stage just as the sun was setting. It was a hot day, but the wind came up and made everything perfect. We played beautiful music to beautiful people on a beautiful evening. Perfect.
Evan - John's stalker at the Skylark.
Nate - Dualistics @ The Skylark minus the load out in a downpour
Jess - Playing a toy piano in a carpet store.
Jon - Playing a 45 minute set straight through in a beautiful church; it was transcendent.

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
John - Wear fire retardant suits, drink a lot, get ready for the rock apocalypse... the rockalypse.
Nate - Don't eat the brown acid
Jess - Drink water and prepare yourself for rock-ecstasy.
Jon - Seek out the underdogs, be open minded, support the artists you enjoy in any way you can.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
John - Buy our last two CDs. Place 6 pieces of bacon between the CDs. Now eat the bacon while you listen to the CDs. This isn't totally edible, but it could feed you spiritually, emotionally and intellectually for years. We call this a "bacon rockwich."
Nate - Rock Sandwich, brought to you by yours truly
Jess - Anything cooked.
Jon - Ranch dressing over pasta noodles.

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
John - The Inactivists
Evan - Born In The Flood
Jon - The Motet

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
John - I'm not gonna tell you what to do, man. Grow up and find your own music.
Evan - Ruby Vroom, Rubber Soul and The Wall.
Nate - My Bloody Valentine Loveless, 12 Rods' Lost Time, T. Rex The Slider
Jon - Love John's answer.  In case they weren't grown up, Miles Smiles by Miles Davis, Sky Blue Sky by Wilco, Shack Man by MMW. But more so, grow up and find your own music.

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
John - "I Sleep With Danger." That will be my nickname during UMS.
Evan - There's more pavement than shade...  Remember to hydrate in between beer bongs.
Nate - It's cray cray
Jon - Can I borrow $10?

Allout Helter

(Questions answered by singer Ross Hostage)
Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
We are playing on Sunday July 22nd at 3 Kings Tavern (one of my favorite spots in Denver) at 4pm.

How long has your band been together?
The band began in late 2008 and I joined in the summer of 2010.

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?
My first show with Allout Helter was at 3 Kings, actually. It was memorable because we received a really positive response and we met DC Fallout, a rad band from California who we've been in a band romance with ever since.

What was the first album you purchased?
The first album I ever bought with my own money (allowance haha) was Nirvana's Nevermind on cassette. The tape finally snapped a few years ago while I was listening to it at my parent's house.

What album was your most recent purchase?
I picked up a copy of Random Orbits' 12" pressing of their EP and I picked up Stabbed in Back's 7" when we played with them last weekend.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
One: You've gotta hustle. Just because you talk to people on Facebook doesn't mean you're making fans. You have to support the other bands in the scene, hopefully because you like them anyway already. Two: Don't whine. Nobody likes people complaining that they don't get breaks or that they don't get why another band gets a show instead of them. Practice hard, book your own shows, be objective about your own material. If the songs are there, which is why we do this in the first place, then people will notice.

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
Tin Horn Prayer, Hot Apostles, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Git Some, Minor Note Orchestra, Native Daughters. There's not a lot of punk at the UMS haha but I've got pretty broad tastes.

Best past UMS experience?
Last year was my fave out of the two years I've gone to so far. Fox and the Bird played an un-mic'd set in the middle of the dancefloor at the Rover when they encountered "sound difficulties"; it gave me chills. Also, closing out the showcase in a frenzy with Coverage absolutely slaying some Descendents was the perfect culmination to four days of awesomeness.

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
See as much music as you can. Make as many new friends as possible. Drink heavily, alternating with water, of course.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
I'm hoping that the sandwich cart guy shows up again; his gruyere and carmelized onion grilled cheese was the bomb last time! I'm also hoping that vegan truck makes an appearance. Otherwise, Karma makes amazing chinese food, gotta rock Famous for a quick slice. I'm gonna promote Swifts, also, because the lady who runs the place is super sweet.

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
That's tough. I'd have to say Tin Horn Prayer still holds that spot for me. They're just so damned creative and their band is better than mine. Those jerks.

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
Also tough. If we're talking punk: Propagandhi - Today's Empire's, Tomorrow's Ashes, Bad Religion - Suffer, and Bouncing Souls - How I Spent My Summer Vacation. Anything else: The Slackers - Peculiar, The Band - The Last Waltz, and Oingo Boingo's double album live farewell concert. That shit will blow your mind.

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
Nope, thanks for the support!

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
Denver Wheel Club 404 at midnight, Sunday night.

How long has your band been together?
about a year with the current lineup.

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?
our first show with Mikael was a Halloween party at Babooshka on Colfax.  I wanted to be a zombie barbershop quartet, with four-part "brrrraaaaiiiinnnsss" harmonies... but we ended up just dressing like zombie cowboys instead.

What was the first album you purchased?
Barenaked Ladies Stunt.  this was before i really listened to music.  i think i had gotten the soundtrack to the movie Spawn as a gift before that, but that was the first cd i bought for myself.

What album was your most recent purchase?
I pre-ordered the new Ending People record, but i don't have it yet.  I bought Safe Boating Is No Accident's new EP at their release show.  i like it a lot.
The new ramona falls album. Saw them at the hi-dive, incredible.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
OWN IT!
What mike said...

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
Zebroids and a bunch of bands i haven't seen or heard before.

Best past UMS experience?
Ideal Fathers' set in 2009 at the skylark.  our guitar amp blew up as soon as we started. it was raining pretty hard outside, so people stuck around while we were trying to figure out what to do, and eventually Red Light Driver saved us and let us use their amp.  we played a quick set with more energy than we ever played before.  then Boba Fett & The Americans showed up outside after we loaded out.  it was great.  Also, The Outfit's set at Rock The Cradle a couple years ago was pretty cool.  i broke my glasses earlier in the day and was borrowing a pair with the wrong prescription just so i could kind of see.  i remember lots of dancing, and stars hanging from the ceiling, and i found a pair of aviator sunglasses behind my bass amp when i dropped my borrowed glasses.  tons of fun.
Ya, rock the cradle was really fantastic. The energy that the UMS evokes is incredible.

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
just have as much fun as you can.  be like this guy: Sasquatch music festival 2009 - Guy starts dance party  (youtube.com/watch?v=GA8z7f7a2Pk)
and drink some water!

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
there's probably gonna be a bunch of food trucks with good stuff.  of course, there's sputnik and el diablo and the hornet and socorro too...
Wrap at the hornet!

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
i'll say Black Black Ocean just because.  i like too many denver bands to pick a favorite.
The knew, they not only rock but have helped us in more ways than I can count.

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
Death Grips The Money Store
Mission of Burma Vs
Bill Withers Still Bill
The drums the drums
The strokes is this it
Cave singers no witch

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
The UMS is largely volunteer operated so that they can pay all the proceeds to the bands.  That's pretty amazing considering the scope of the whole thing
