The UMS July 19th-22nd South Broadway
School Knights
We are playing on Thursday, July 19th at 3 Kings.
How long has your band been together?
As a four piece, it’s been about a year and a half.
What was your band's first live show/ performance and what
was memorable about it?
The first School Knights show was at the Boulder warehouse
venue Astroland. We were a 2 piece then, just guitar and drums, and the other
bands were Royal Baths, Gauntlet Hair, and Ty Segall. We were really nervous and we played terribly.
What was the first album you purchased?
The soundtrack to Pokémon, the TV show, not the movie.
What album was your most recent purchase?
Happy Nation by Ace of Base.
Do you have any advice for new bands?
Don’t be in a band, draw or something.
Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
There are a lot of awesome bands playing, but some we are
especially excited about are Big Frieda, THEEsatisfaction, and I am excited to
see Cloud Nothings, cause last time we played with them I ran home to eat a
burrito, and then fell asleep.
Best past UMS experience?
The only other time we played was last year, our bass
player, Ben, was stuck in Texas so we played without him; it wasn’t amazing,
but I guess it's our best past UMS experience.
This year should be better!
Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Stay hydrated, stretch before you walk around, charge your
phone in advance, let your parents know where you are and what shows you’re
going to, bring sun screen for outdoor shows and walking, make sure you have
some money for food and tickets for UMS.
What's the best food people can find on Broadway during
the festival?
I can’t afford anything on Broadway other than pizza, so
pizza.
Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
Thee Goochi Boiz
If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what
three albums would you recommend to our customers?
Anything with guitars.

Take To the Oars
We are playing at the Skylark at 8pm on Saturday July 21st
How long has your band been together?
With our current line up we have been together for 3 years.
What was your band's first live show/ performance and what
was memorable about it?
Our first live performance as Take To The Oars was at Larimer
Lounge, which is one of our favorite places to play and we got to open for
Local H, who we all
grew up listening to.
It truly felt like a new chapter and it was a great way to christen the
new name and musical direction.
What was the first album you purchased?
My dad was military, so we always shopped at the PX growing
up, and I remember saving my allowance
up so I could buy Michael Jackson's Bad on vinyl. It lasted for about a week before the only song I could play
without it scratching or skipping was "Dirty Diana" which,
ironically, was my least favorite song on the album. I got into buying music really early. I had a cassette tape collection spanning from Digital
Underground and Bobby Brown to Def Leopard and Aerosmith.
What album was your most recent purchase?
I recently bought the new album from Denver's The Hate. Great rock n roll and it's good to support
local artists. There are so many good
ones in Denver. Also the new Swayback
album is very good and also recently purchased.
Do you have any advice for new bands?
Work your ass off and manage your expectations. Always give lots of love to the people that
come to the shows. Their support is
what gets you through the harder times of being an artist. That connection is the best part of it for
me.
Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
I'm going into this year very open minded and trying to
catch some bands I haven't seen before.
It's liberating not having a strict agenda. We plan on hitting it hard this year.
Best past UMS experience?
Last year we started at the official Saturday night
afterparty and ended up our friends the Foot.'s house until 6am. Met a lot of great people that are still
currently a part of my life. The party
was an added bonus. The hangover was not.
We had a great time at our Moe's showcase last year as
well. All day summer festivals are the
best!
Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Use the buddy system when crossing back and forth on
Broadway. Also camelbacks and fanny
packs are in this year (that's less of a tip and more of a fact).
What's the best food people can find on Broadway during
the festival?
Sputnik is so good.
I like the Ethiopian sliders
If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what
three albums would you recommend to our customers?
Buy your 3 favorite local artists' albums and then pat
yourself on the back - it will make them feel special, and most importantly, it
keeps all this momentum going.
El Toro de la Muerte
4:00pm on Saturday @ the
HiDive.
How long has your band been together?
7 years
What was your band's first live show/ performance and what
was memorable about it?
The first show that I remember was at Bar Bar and it was
memorable because that place was packed and crazy.
What was the first album you purchased?
REO Speedwagon when I was
5.
What album was your most recent purchase?
Red Riders - Drown in Colour
Do you have any advice for new bands?
Being friendly and polite to other bands and venues will go
a lot further than you think. Being a dick will do the same.
Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
Kingdom of Magic. Panal. School Knights. Tons of others.
Best past UMS experience?
We played at 3 Kings in between I Sank Molly Brown and Alan
Alda and my old friend Joe Ramirez was running sound. So, that was pretty
awesome.
Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Spread yourself thin on this one. I think there are tons of
good bands and if you only plan your days around the headliners you're going to
be missing out.
What's the best food people can find on Broadway during
the festival?
That's tough. I like Sputnik.
Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
The Still City.
If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what
three albums would you recommend to our customers?
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel. Hunky
Dory - David Bowie. Orange Rhyming Dictionary - Jets to Brazil.
Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that
you think people need to know?
We'll be giving away CDs wherever we can. Just ask us. Keep
an open mind. We get called "veteran" rockers a lot.
