The UMS July 19th-22nd South Broadway

Fairchildren

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
8pm, Thursday, July 26 at The Irish Rover

How long has your band been together?
Fairchildren has been a band for about a year and a half.

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?
Fairchildren began at Lost Lake for a weekly residency in January 2011. All of us were playing together in other bands, but we wanted to put together a set of jazz standards and a set of original songs to suit Lost Lake's fireside lounge. That first night was one of my favorite shows; it was dark and cozy and terrifying to play so many new songs.

What was the first album you purchased?
Joseph Pope - Pat Benatar, Greatest Hits
Julie Davis - Michael Jackson, Thriller
Patrick Meese - Aerosmith, Get a Grip
James Han - Michael Jackson, Thriller

What album was your most recent purchase?
Julie Davis - Beach House, Bloom
Joseph Pope - Tallest Man on Earth, There's No Leaving Now!
Patrick Meese - Serge Gainsbourg, Percussions
James Han - Jonny Greenwood, There Will Be Blood

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Have fun.

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
Emily Wells, Land Lines, Gauntlet Hair, Snake Rattle Rattle Snake, Bon Iver

Best past UMS experience?
UMS is one of the highlights of summer in Denver, and each year has been full of best experiences. Here are few:
* Land Lines playing at the Mayan
* Nathaniel Rateliff and Joseph Pope III moving their gear from venue to venue along South Broadway in a shopping cart
* Bad Weather California's epic sets the past few years at The Irish Rover

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Try to catch an act in the South Broadway Christian Church. It's a refuge from the madness on South Broadway and the sound is amazing.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
My favorite stop last year was the Moe's BBQ truck that was parked between Archer and Bayaud on Broadway. As the number of Denver food trucks is on the rise, I am looking forward to more street food this year at the UMS.

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
Besides Firefall, that's tough. My favorite record to come out of Denver is Flowers of the Moon, by Moonspeed, though Bad Weather California is hard to beat.

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
Creep On Creepin' On, Timber Timbre
Fear Fun, Father John Misty
King of the Delta Blues Singers, Robert Johnson

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
Drink lots of water.

A. Tom Collins

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
3 Kings Tavern, Midnight, Saturday, July 21

How long has your band been together?
Close to 3 years

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?
Bluebird Theater as part of Nathaniel Rateliff's Holiday Showcase. We played every song we knew at the time, all 3 of 'em.

What album was your most recent purchase?
Dr. John's Locked Down

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Be nice to sound engineers.

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
Big Freedia, Blue Rider, Broken Spirits, Bad Weather California

Best past UMS experience?
All of them.

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Wear shoes and brush your teeth.

In the Whale

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
Sunday, 10PM at 3 Kings Tavern

How long has your band been together?
roughly 2 years

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?
The Block Party in Greeley. It was just to play that festival as our first show. Our good friend, Ely, books it and he really helped us out. It was a great way to launch the band.

What was the first album you purchased?
ERIC: The first album I ever bought with my own money was 311's self titled album, but I felt guilty because it has cuss words in it, so I took it back. My how the times have changed.
NATE: The first album that I bought was Deftones' White Pony. I never bought albums when I was younger...there was a K-mart in my town that I got good at stealing music from. So the first album that I stole was Blind Melon's self titled album.

What album was your most recent purchase?
ERIC: Nothing Like The First Time by Watsky
NATE: Mutations by Beck

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Make friends with other bands, seek out opinions of people you respect who you know aren't going to sugar coat you, and watch your ego.

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
Petals Of Spain, Rachel and the Kings, Attic Attack, Churchill, The Photo Atlas, Eldren, and My Body Sings Electric to name a few

Best past UMS experience?
We've only had one! Seeing members of other bands that we look up to, like Pat Meese of Fairchildren, Nate from The Epilogues, and Andy Rok from Bop Skizzum watching our set was a trip!

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Drink water (especially if you're drinking alcohol), don't forget to eat, and don't be afraid to check out a new band

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
Famous Pizza... hands down

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
ERIC: Fear Before The March Of Flames
NATE: Single File

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
ERIC: Diorama by Silverchair, Futuresex/Lovesounds by Justin Timberlake, and The Way I See It by Raphael Saadiq
NATE: Louder Than Bombs by the Smiths, Too High To Die by Meat Puppets, Evil Empire by Rage Against The Machine

Nope, I think that we are all good! Thanks again. Hope to see you soon.
