Confluence
Where/ When are you playing for the UMS?
Confluence is playing around 8 p.m. on Friday, July 19 at The Skylark, oh yeah.

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.
Confluence mixes angular, math-y arrangements with catchy melodies and subtle grooves to attain a sound that is both emotionally engaging, musically deft and exceptionally upbeat.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
Possibly a Smashing Pumpkins' "Greatest Hits" album. It was so long ago, when Sam Goody was still inside of the mall.

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
We've all been huge fans of Their/They're/There's self-titled debut EP. The trio features Mike Kinsella of Cap'n Jazz on drums and Evan Weiss from Into It/Over It on bass and vocals, as well as Matthew Frank of Loose Lips, Sink Ships on guitar. The whole album shreds.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Always think about the next step, but try not to rush anything.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
Cults and Mudhoney will surely play interesting sets. Otherwise, we're ready to see School Knight's final show, Man Cub's final show, Born in the Flood, Shenandoah Davis, Princess Music, Rumtum and others.

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
Most. Amazing. Weekend.

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
Probably seeing what seemed to be a two-and-a-half hour set by El Ten Eleven a couple years back. Then again, last year's Pavement cover set was damn fun.

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
Come early to find parking and bring a water bottle, as well as some towels for when you play. Be willing to go anywhere and see anything. Most importantly, participate in the weekend, not just the day your band is playing. And, seriously, have some fun. UMS only happens once a year.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?
Probably Famous Pizza because it's so close to everything, pretty fast with wait times and cheap. I'm still curious as to why there are currently four pizza shops in a three block radius on S. Broadway? Can anyone explain this phenomena?

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
The Fancy Tiger and Buffalo Exchange combo, for sure.

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
There are seriously too many, but my list includes: Achille Lauro, Vitamins, Hindershot, Force Publique, Bad Weather California, Princess Music, Everything Absent or Distorted, Born in the Flood and more.

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his music collection.  What three albums would you recommend?
I'm only speaking on my behalf, but, first, "Nigerian Special Part 2," which features a mix of great Nigerian psych and blues. Paul Simon's "Rhythm of the Saints" and, finally, This Town Needs Guns "13.0.0.0."

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
Confluence's set is going to be great.
If you come to it, we will party with you.
We have new songs and plenty of other fun surprises in store.

Hi-Strung
Where/ When are you playing for the UMS?
3 Kings Tavern, Saturday July 20, 2013 at 4:00pm

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.
Hi-Strung is an orchestrated 4-piece rock band that will get your dance on with haunting melodies and thunderous beats.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
Men At Work on Vinyl, the one with the yellow and black cover with a telephone.
I was 6 yrs old. I then painted a picture of the album cover at school in art class. Still have that record.

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
B.R.M.C. 'Specter at the Feast'

Do you have any advice for new bands?
1) Keep a steady rehearsal schedule the same from week to week. Do not rehearse for any less than or any more than 2 hours at a time.
2) Less talking, more rocking. you can meet out of band rehearsal to develop a friendship.
3) Get a dry erase board and use it when arranging a new song. Take pictures of the dry erase board and email them to everyone in the band so no one forgets what you were writing.
4) Every musician keep a folder with notations of music for their instrument and/ or voice.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
Yes, Mudhoney and The Omens on Friday night of course.
Clear Black on Saturday at 3pm at Hi-Dive. Planning to load my gear in before 3 pm at 3 Kings, head to their set, and walk back across the street 15 minutes before mine so I am ready to set up on stage and play.

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
Fun! Inspiring! Enchanting!

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
Performing and having the venue sell out at the Hi-Dive when I was the bassist in Overcasters. Receiving a text from my best friend saying they were asking $40 at the door and the line was down the street. that she loved me but $40 was a little rich to see me play that day, friends yelling out to me while I performed encouraging me, a sea of faces...that was really amazing!

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
Bring your own gear; show up on time when they asked you to arrive- not earlier and definitely not later. Plan to load out your gear immediately after your set, take it home, then grab a taxi back to the UMS so you can drink for free at the bar they have set up for bands this year without having any gear or driving worries.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?
Gary Lee's!

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
True Love

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
Devotchka

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his music collection.  What three albums would you recommend?
Nick Cave 'Murder Ballads'
New Pornographers 'Romantics'
Lauryn Hill 'The miseducation of Lauryn Hill'

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
This is Hi-Strung's first year at UMS and we are sooooo excited to be a part of UMS this year!

Sure do: If you expect me to see your band you'd better come see mine!

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
I got my yellow highlighter out the moment they announced set times. It'll be really cool to see Mudhoney. And I saw Lord Huron at Bonnaroo and they are definitely worth seeing again. As for locals: Chemistry Club and Carmelita's Lovers should be entertaining as always.

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
performances, friends, love

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
Last years after party in the basement of 3 Kings with MF Ruckus. They played till 3am with the most debauched, beer-soaked sleazy rock n roll show I've ever seen.

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
Remember it's a marathon not a race. Pace yourself with the drinking and don't spend too much time in the sun.

Yeah the Hornet. Not only do they have great food but my band is playing there!
