2011 UMS band Interviews #6 (UMS one week away!)

Twist and Shout has asked some bands performing at the UMS to answer a few questions for us- check out these bands July21st-July24 at the UMS. (ONLY A WEEK AWAY!)

Pirate Signal

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
7:30 on Saturday July 23rd on the Sailor Jerry Stage!

Do you have your cd for sale at Twist and Shout?
We do!

How long has your band been together?
This one? This group of people? 6 months.

What was your band's first live show/ performance?
We played together first and Dixon's Opera House in Longmont! It's a nice venue!

What was the first album you purchased?
Thriller!

Do you have any (quick) advice for new bands?
No. I hate new bands. I'm playing. Kinda.

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
Oooh! So many to name! Kingdom of Magic. Is Pictureplane playing? His new song makes my face go numb, which is a good thing.

Best past UMS experience?
Last year was fresh. I played with a DJ who sadly, is no longer with us. I mean, he's not dead, he's just not with US, you know what I mean? Anyway last year was great, it was alot of fun, we played in this empty european car garage to a rapt audience of well-wishers and boosters. They sang along savagely and I met Chez that night, so of course, the evening was magical.

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
See The Pirate Signal. And BLKHRTS. It will change your whole perspective on shit. And ADAI. They are sick

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
I dunno. I didn't eat, but Sputnik has always been good to me. Though, I have not seen her in sometime. Sputnik baby, don't be mad. I'm coming.

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
Adai, Pictureplane, and another band that always inspired me is one called P.I.M.P O.R D.I.E. I think one of the members is in Dubskin now. Through going to their shows, I met the girl who took my virginity. I would like to thank them for that. And they had two of the most magnetic frontmen I had ever seen.

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would
you recommend to our customers?
The Pirate Signal-No Weak Heart Shall Prosper, The Smiths- Strangeways, Here We Come, Siouxie and The Banshees- A Kiss in The Dreamhouse

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people
need to know
?
Denver Festivals like this are paramount to our musical culture. I just want to say thank you to the organizers and people who dedicate their time to it. You are heroes.

Patrick Brown
Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
Saturday the 23rd at Sputnik from 8-10 PM, leading in to Bruce's AM Gold night.

Do you have your cd for sale at Twist and Shout?
I don't have a CD of my own here, but of course I sell the music I play at work.

How long has your band been together?
Not a band, but I've played music out in public from time to time since 1996 or so.

What was your band's first live show/ performance?
1996 or so.

What was the first album you purchased?
Probably Chic "C'est Chic." That's one of the first I remember anyway.

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
A bunch of stuff. I'll probably just bump around as see what I can catch and try out different stuff that I'm not familiar with. But if I can make it work to see The Epilogues, Snake Rattle Rattle Snake, B. Dolan, Sage Francis, Le Divorce, or Joshua Novak that would make me happy. But Le Divorce and those Snake Rattle guys are playing opposite my set, so I probably won't make those.
Best past UMS experience?
The whole thing was a blast. Just loved walking a quarter of a block and running in to someone I knew in the scene, then moving another half block and stopping to talk with someone else and then another quarter block only to run in to someone else. Oh, and the checking out the music all over the place was great too.

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Try to catch music you're not already familiar with as much as possible and also go see friends' bands that you keep promising to see but haven't gotten to yet.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
Too much to list, but I'm eager to try out Socorro's Street Tacos on Bayaud - a tiny little place between Broadway and Lincoln that has been closed when I've passed by too early or too late. Also, I dig the new Sugar Bakeshop at 3rd & Broadway - coffee and sweets! Yum.

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
I am and I already do. I'm currently in love with the latest by Tune-Yards "Whokill." Folks who like African music should check out Sorry Bamba's collection "Volume One 1970-1979" that Thrill Jockey just released or the terrific 2-disc collection "Highlife Time Vol. 2." That's three isn't it?
The Hollyfelds (Answers from Keith)

Saturday, 11PM, The Irish Rover

Do you have your cd for sale at Twist and Shout?

What was your band's first live show/ performance?
First show was a backyard party / BBQ. Our second show was at Cricket on the Hill.

What was the first album you purchased?
Pac Man Fever or Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Do you have any (quick) advice for new bands?
Play a lot of shows and invest the money back into the band so you have cash to do stuff you want to do. Learn to like really cheap beer. Listen to the Chixdiggit song "Quit Your Job."

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
The Heyday, The Polkanauts.

Best past UMS experience?
