Green Druid

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
Saturday the 27th at Hi-Dive. We go on at 11:00pm.

How long has your band been together?
Late 2014. That would make it around 4 and a half years.

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?
Our first show was in December of 2014 at Larimer Lounge. Not many people came out, but those who did were all close friends who support us to this day.

What was the first album you purchased?
Pixies - Doolittle - Chris

What album was your most recent purchase?
Throne of Iron - 2018 Demo - Ryan

Do you have any advice for new bands?
-Play a lot and work hard.
-Don't take criticism too personally, but also be open to it.
-Make sure you're always having fun. It's easy to get caught up in bullshit, but if you're not having fun there is no point.

Besides your own band, who do you want to see at the UMS?
Black Mountain, Earth Gang, Love Gang, Nightwraith, Church Fire, Dr3mca$st, The Milk Blossoms, Emerald Siam, Princess Dewclaw, Sur Ellz, Yasi, and many more. There are tons of cool bands playing.

Best past UMS experience?
It's nice that so many different establishments open their doors to musicians. You can wander into any random venue and possibly stumble on some very cool music

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Pace yourself and stay hydrated!

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
You can get yourself a dank-ass pizza pie.

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
 Matriarch. Great dudes. Great music.

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
David Bowie - Low
Sleep - Dopesmoker
Portishead - Dummy

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
We're working a new record and are planning to debut some new tunage at UMS.

The Milk Blossoms

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
We’ll be performing at Denver Drumz & Music on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.

How long has your band been together?
9 years.

What was your band's first live show/performance and what was memorable about it?
Our first live show was in the backyard of the Tea House, a now defunct community house in the Baker district. After Blair joined, our first show all together was upstairs at the Mercury Cafe and these first few shows were memorable because we all used to be on different instruments like guitar, saw, keyboards and various children’s toys.

What was the first album you purchased?
Harmony - Britney Spears ...Baby One More Time
Blair - The Ramones Ramones (debut)
Michelle - Space Jam Soundtrack

What album was your most recent purchase?
Harmony - Felix Ayodele and the New Moons
Michelle - Whitney Houston, self titled

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Figure out how songwriting works best for the group, lean into your strengths, consider a little tradition to keep yourselves connected before playing,

Besides your own band, who do you want to see at the UMS?
Wow, so many, just a few include...Leikeli47, Gardens & Villa, Curta, Definitely Maybe, Wheelchair Sports Camp, Sur Ellz, Dressy Bessy, Chicano Batman, Nina and the Hold Tight, and The Velveteers.

Best past UMS experience?
Michelle - Seeing all the old friends is my favorite part every year.
Harmony - Yes! And when the wind stirred up when we started singing about cyclones, hurricanes, tornadoes...

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Blair - Wear comfy shoes, drink water, listen to a bunch of new artists.
Michelle - Seek of a feeling of awe.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
Michelle - Sputnik's Mac and Cheese.

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
Michelle-...I don't even know how to answer this!

How long has your band been together?
Modern Leisure has been performing live for about 3 years now.

What was the first album you purchased?
Parachutes by Coldplay.

What album was your most recent purchase?
I picked up Jackie Coen's album Jagg when I saw her perform at Meow Wolf.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Focus on making recordings over playing shows! Build your own studio so you can record yourself!

Besides your own band, who do you want to see at the UMS?
Chicano Batman, Gardens and Villa, American Grandma, Ashley Koett, Brianna Straut, Corsicana, Decollage, Down Time, Easter Island, Ned Garthe Explosion, Porlolo, Pout House, Rumtum, Tyto Alba

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
Tennis

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
Really depends on the person but just off the top of my head I would say:
Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino
Phoenix - Ti Amo

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
Get lots of sleep the week before! Try not to day drink! Bring earplugs! Plan your outfits ahead of time!

Down Time

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
We are playing the Grouphug UMS day party at the Hi- Dive on 7/27, "The Land Before Slime." It's our second year hosting the party and last year was so fun. The theme is "pre-historic" and we made all kinds of decorations, hopefully the Hi-Dive invites us back after, jk.
The schedule is:
1pm: Bluebook
2pm: Civili Engineer
3pm: Turvy Organ
4pm: Pouthouse

5pm: Down Time
(Paper Mache skulls and fog will NOT be in short supply.)
We will be closing out the afternoon and then we play again across the street at The Hornet at 7pm for our Official set. (Saturday 27th)

How long has your band been together?
About 1000 days

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?
Thanks to the internet I can tell you with confidence that it was June 24th at Syntax in 2016! We were all really nervous and we hadn’t decided on a band name yet so we played one show as “Raised Beds”… that name obviously didn’t stick

What was the first album you purchased?
Nickelback

What album was your most recent purchase?
Shana Cleveland’s Night of the Worn Moon. It's dark and eerie and so beautiful.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Practice a lot and record yourself so you know what you sound like. Also, be kind and open to all experiences in the scene cause you never know who is gonna come round again and help you out! We have been so grateful to everyone who has given us a chance!

Besides your own band, who do you want to see at the UMS?
Y La Bamba, Chicano Batman , Miya Folick, Briffaut, Specific Ocean

Best past UMS experience?
That year it rained mid afternoon was pretty spesh, last year when we ate the last Socorro’s taco we will EVER EAT AGAIN, 2 years ago (I think) when Land Lines played a late Sunday night show at Syntax and we all had our minds blown

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Drink water! Be a lone wolf - UMS is NOT the time to travel with a group, they will slow you down. See as much as you can! Bring some snacks in your fanny-pack and BE NICE. Tip the bartenders - they are working extra hard for us. And don’t get too drunk cause then you will be a hung-over monster the next day and regret all the shows you missed cause you felt like crap. It’s a marathon people, get it together.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
It was Socorros, so I’m at a loss.

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
Tennis, duh.

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
Since there are 3 we each answered this question.
From Davey, our bass-playing-foot-drummer boy: Sade’s Stronger than Pride, a tape that has been living in my car’s cassette deck for the better part of two years.
Justin says: Cate le Bon’s newest album , Reward cause it's current, progressive and sick AF.
Alyssa says: Chad VanGaalen’s Soft Airplane cause it's one of the albums that continues to bring me musical inspiration whenever I'm feeling like I need it .

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
It's literally happening in our back yard, in one of the most laid back parts of town - Baker. We love it and don’t want it to change too much. So leave your aggro, crowd mentality on the shelf and just enjoy what Denver has to offer. Find some new bands to be stoked about and then continue to support them throughout the year! Don’t get wasted too soon or we will make fun of you.
