2011 UMS band Interviews #8

Twist and Shout has asked some bands performing at the UMS to answer a few questions for us- check out these bands July21st-July24 at the UMS. 



Joshua Novak:

Where and when are you playing at the UMS? 
10pm Friday July 22nd at The Skylark 

Do you have your cd for sale at Twist and Shout? 
I do. It's called, DEAD LETTERS

How long has your band been together? 
I have been playing around Denver for more than ten years, with a different cast of musicians

What was your band's first live show/ performance? 
At The Soiled Dove when it was on Market street back in early 2000

What was the first album you purchased? 
When I was eight years old, I saved up and bought Michael Jackson's BAD on cassette

Do you have any (quick) advice for new bands
Stick with it, and be good

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS? 
Candy Claws, Ian Cooke, The Centennial, Kissing Party, Hearts In Space, Raven and The Writing Desk,  Bare Bones etc...

Best past UMS experience? 
One of my favorite shows I've ever played was a UMS show, maybe two or three years ago. We played at The Skylark and the crowd was electric. Everyone was dancing and singing along.

Do you have any tips for festival goers? 
check out something new, pace yourself and wear sunscreen

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival? 
Not sure. I never eat before I play a show

Who is your all time favorite Denver band? 
Far too many. See list above.

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers? 
Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush, Within and Without by Washed Out and every PJ Harvey album they could find

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know? 
Denver is an amazing place with amazing talents and I am proud to be apart of it all. This music showcase is a great, if not perfect, example of that.

 Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
The Hi-Dive on Sat. 7/23 at 8pm 

Do you have your cd for sale at Twist and Shout?
Yes and at Wax Trax too.  and perhaps a preview of the new one will make an appearance at UMS...

How long has your band been together?
2 years

What was your band's first live show/ performance?
Día de los Muertos 2009 at Theory and Practice 


What was the first album you purchased?
the real one, or the one we tell people?  It was 1989 and we were 8-10 years old, so take a guess... 


Do you have any (quick) advice for new bands?
Booze is your friend.   

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
Accordion Crimes, Amazing Twin, Fairchildren, Houses, Land Lines, Lightlooms, Overcasters, Hindershot, My Gold Mask,               Bear Hands, Black Heart Procession...   

Best past UMS experience?
Sweating our asses off in a 100+ degree Hi-Dive while Houses played to a totally packed room at midnight, oh and dancing to Boba Fett and the Americans in the pouring rain on the street outside of Sputnik. 

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
wear deodorant.   

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
If the food trucks come out, that's your best bet.

The Kills--Midnight Boom, Blonde Redhead--23, The National--Boxer 

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
watch out for flying mannequin heads.

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?
3:00 pm, Sunday, July 24th at Michelangelo’s

Do you have your cd for sale at Twist and Shout?
Yes I do!

How long has your band been together?
Since I was born. 

What was your band's first live show/ performance?
The first one I can remember was Missy Elliot’s sixth grade birthday party. We played for about 20 minutes until everyone decided to jump in the pool. 

What was the first album you purchased?
In A Time of Hate by Endpoint

Do you have any (quick) advice for new bands?
Be respectful. Hang out together. Make good music.

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
I’m planning to see as many artists as I can.

Best past UMS experience?
This is my first!

Do you have any tips for festival goers?
Drink lots of water.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?
My bet would be Sputnik, although I haven’t sampled all the cuisine available in the area.

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?
I don’t think I’m qualified to answer that yet…but I’m working on it. 

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?
Based on how I’m feeling today…
Slint – Spiderland
Talking Heads – Remain In Light
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea – Neutral Milk Hotel

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
Could you ask me again next year?

Where and when are you playing at the UMS? 
 Sunday 7/24/11  9pm at the Skylark Lounge.

Do you have your cd for sale at Twist and Shout?
 Yes!  Our self-titled full length is available at Twist and Shout on CD and vinyl (w/ free download!)

How long has your band been together?
1 and 1/2 years, though Nathan and I have been in bands together for 5+ years.

What was your band's first live show/ performance?
6/18/10 at Moe's BBQ with Bury My Bones and Lil' Slugger

What was the first album you purchased?
 I'm not sure what the first album I ever purchased with my own money was, but my older sister gave me a copy of Ace Of Base, "The Sign" on cassette when I was in fourth grade.  Maybe that's where I get my pop sensibilities from.

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?
There are so many!  Some include Rainbowhead, Pythian Whispers, Finn Riggins, Don'ts & Be Carefuls, Lil' Slugger, Night Of Joy, King Mob, the list goes on.  I'm also really looking forward to Reel Films, the new music films part of the UMS this year!  Fingers of the Sun has a music video premiering on Friday 7/22 at Delite.

Best past UMS experience?
Seeing Jeff Suthers solo set at Kozo Fine Arts in 2007.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival? 
Spicy Basil or Sputnik.  Or vegan ice cream from Sweet Action!

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
