2013 UMS Band Interviews #3

My name is Casey,
and I play in Shining Wires
Where/ When are you playing for the UMS?
Sunday, July 21st 10pm @ The HiDive

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.

We started the 90's pop punk band that we never got around to starting in the 90's. Influenced by Samiam, Seaweed and Hot Water Music.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
If I remember correctly it was The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Coming Out of Their Shell sold at Pizza Hut

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
I've listening to the shit out of Bad Religion True North

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Have fun! The only person standing in your way is you.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
Joy Subtraction, Native Daughters, Andy Thomas, The Knew, Land Lines, Steak Cattle Cattle Steak, The Reckless Nights, In the Whale, Allout Helter, and The Royal. It wouldn't be a UMS with out seeing Matt Clark play.

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
Drink, Drank, Drunk

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
I was lucky enough to play in a Descendents cover band with some friends, titled "Coverage" 2 UMS' ago. We got to be the very last band of the weekend at 3 Kings. It was a lot of fun!

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
I think if you just go, it's impossible to have a bad time.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?
I love the food trucks, so we'll have to see who makes an appearance this year.

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
Who has time for shopping when there are soooooo many places to drink and play pinball!

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
I initially want to say Planesmistakenforstars, but I have to remind myself they are actually an Illinois band. So I go with my good friends, Pinhead Circus.

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his music collection. What three albums would you recommend?
If I was working in a record store I guess my response would have to be "You don't know?!" (a little record store humor for ya)

Where/ When are you playing for the UMS?
-Motorhead is my favorite band.

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.
-I love Motorhead so much that every time I've been on tour with my band in LA I try to find Lemmy at the Rainbow.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
-Well, before Motorhead it was Hawkwind, duh.

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
-The unreleased Motorhead album.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
-Try to be Motorhead or don't be in a band.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
-I noticed Motorhead isn't anywhere on the flyer.

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
-A bunch of goofy people seeing bands that are in dire need of Motorhead.

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
-I can't remember if it was the time that Motorhead didn't play or a few years before that, when they didn't play?  It's been quite a blur of missing out on the greatest band in the universe every year.

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
-Stay home and work on your Motorhead tribute band.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?

Red Fox Run
Where/ When are you playing for the UMS?
July 20th, 9:00 at Hornet

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.
Red Fox Run plays earnest, passionate rock with humble blue collar-angst and attitude. Songs are brooding but poppy, and performance is engaging and exciting.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
Best of Led Zeppelin

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
Alt-J, An Awesome Wave. Not sure if it's new for this year, but it's rocking my 2013 something fierce.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
There's always someone out there working harder than you. If you're going to do this, do it for real. No half-assing.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
Super excited to watch In The Whale, Anthony Ruptak, Sauna, The Epilogues, Photo Atlas... SO many good bands. Also excited to get to watch the bands I've heard of, but never heard, and there are a LOT of those. I'll have to put together an intricate list...

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
Musical candystore adventure. (can I make candy store into one word please?)

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
Getting kissed by a stranger... It was odd, we were watching Atlas Sound, and this gal I said hello to a few minutes before just turned around, grabbed the back of my head and made out with me. I would've reacted, but she did it so quick, that before I realized her tongue was navigating the inside of my mouth, she had turned around and made her way into the crowd, never to be seen again.

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
Aye! Make sure you plan ahead! I got frustrated my first year because I just waltzed in and missed tons of bands I like either because I didn't know they were playing or because I was late. Also, don't be afraid to break off from your friends and experience something on your own. Music is so much about community, and you'll see it's true when you leave with several new friends (or random kisses).

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?
Sputnik and Illegal Pete's! Two awesome comfort foods for me, but I'll make sure to try new things this year... Also planning on picking up on some Sweet Action.

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
Definitely Buffalo Exchange. Because it's so cheap to get fly there, I have money left over for the other cool shops too!

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
Gonna have to go with In The Whale there. So fun. So much attitude and such nice guys.

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his music collection.  What three albums would you recommend?
Manchester Orchestra's Mean Everything to Nothing, Dear In The Headlights' Mama I'm Swollen, and Delta Spirit's Ode to Sunshine.

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
"Is Red Fox Run going to melt your face?"
Yes.

Thursday July 18th 11:00pm at The Irish Rover

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.
Sweaty, loud, cocaine, speed-rock, fist-pump, whiskey, Rock n Roll, sleeveless denim and/or leather, mouth-breathing fellas, naked middle-aged ladies, beer puddles.

I think it was either 333 by Green Jelly, Rancid Let's Go or Weird Al Off the Deep End

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
Now that you mention it......I don't know if I listened to one single record released in 2013. Closest was maybe Turbonegro Sexual Harassment. Oh...and my record came out this year. That was pretty cool.

Do you have any advice for new bands?
I wise man once told me "you meet the same people on the way up as you meet on the way down". Just be cool to people and can the shit-talk. Oh and drummers...stop breaking down/setting up on stage. Do it off to the side before/after your set. You look like a rude dick-head when you stand on stage for 20 minutes packing up your kit.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
Speedwolf, for sure. Calders Revolvers, Native Daughters, Mudhoney, Zebroids, Blue Rider....jeez there's a lot of rad bands playing...

Last year, we played a top secret show in the basement at 3 Kings. That was nuts!

Pace yourself. 4 days of barhopping and rocking out will bust your melon if you're not careful.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?
I'm gonna hit up the food trucks. Hope there's something greasy and weird.

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
The Science Company (on Lincoln, I know...but that place is rad)

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
Space In Time

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his music collection. What three albums would you recommend?

Deep Purple Made in Japan
Iron Maiden Killers

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
Nah...I'm good
