I am playing at 11pm Friday the 19th of July at The Hornet

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.

You can expect an orgiastic audio feast of lyrical, thoughtful and fun folk n' roll.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?

I bought a Big Band Hits of the 1930's, 40's and 50's CD.

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?

Paer by Kyle Zender and Hill Baker.

Do you have any advice for new bands?

We are a new band, so please give us some advice.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?

Haven't really planned, but I want to see Paer and Attic Attack.

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?

Hot, Diverse. and Sweaty

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?

I was interviewed for three minutes last year 2012 on Open Air 1340am. Alisha Sweeny is a delight.

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?

Come see the Jeffrey Dallet Group. But then again I'm a novice too so maybe that's not a good idea.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?

Bring water and sunscreen. Oh and ear plugs to prevent hearing loss. Sometimes the venues get really loud. I'm looking at you Three Kings.

In twenty-five words or less, describe what somebody who has never heard of your band might expect from your performance at UMS this year.

Aspen Hourglass is a Colorado-based progressive/alternative reggae-rock band consisting of Grayson Erhard, John Napier, and Sean Hanson.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Exposure, promotion, and heart behind the music you produce will lead to ultimate success and gratification in the music industry.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
A member of “South of France” has been a life-long friend and fellow musician since we began playing music at a young age together. Aspen Hourglass is playing at the same time as these guys at a different venue so unfortunately, we will not get a chance to listen to them, but we wish the best of luck and to have a killer performance!

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
A big shout-out to our great friends of “Solterra” but the band that sticks out to us is “Something Underground” for their powerful vocals and musical talent.

Matters of the Bittersweet by Mathew Santos for Vocals, The Machinations of Dementia by Blotted Science for musical complexity and composition, and First Temple by Closure in Moscow for overall effect and inspiration.

Do you have any advice for new bands?

#1) Play live every chance you get! 
#2 ) It's the age of the internet!  So release songs one at a time till you have an album or EP together.
Save money and invest it into music videos first, then invest into promotion. 
#3) Have a unique release plan.  Don't just put your music on iTunes, tell facebook to buy it and call it a day.  you can do way better than that!

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?

Oh.  Sunday is my day!  Go see SHEL at 4pm on Goodwill stage. 

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?

We fit 30 dancing people into one awkward sliver of shade in front of the stage. 

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?

You'll be happier in shorts!  Even if the scene on S. Broadway seems to be about pants. 

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?

Happy Coffee.  I'll also peer into the windows of Beatrice & Woodsley and dream about going there some day soon!

John Common And Blinding Flashes Of Light

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?

Friday, 7/20 11PM Moe's BBQ 530 Broadway Denver, CO. It's going to be rather special.

How long has your band been together?

John - It's all a blur. More than a year, less than 4 years. Or maybe since 1987. A minute.

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?

John - I can't recall.

Evan - It had something to do with the Oriental Theater and a projection screen.

Jon  - I also think it may have been at the Oriental.  I remember a giant screen that was projecting images that looked like a brain, and we were wearing suits.  It was like watching a surgery I suppose.

What was the first album you purchased?

John - The Police Outlandos D'Amour

Nate - Soundgarden Superunknown

Jess - The Flashdance soundtrack.

Jon - Purchased?  Probably Led Zeppelin II

What album was your most recent purchase?

John - I bought Elvis Costello's entire catalog recently.

Evan - I bought Esperanza Spalding's latest, Chamber Music Society

Jon - Brad Mehldau Trio, Ode

Do you have any advice for new bands?

John - Don't do this. It's a trap. Get out now. Can I borrow 10 bucks? Are you going to eat that? Also, next time you hear "warm, fat tone" punch him in the mouth.

Evan - Never buy an RV to tour in.  If it breaks down, you are so limited on where you can get it serviced that the foldout bed just never pays off.  Put together an inventory of all of your gear, including serial #'s and photos, then insure it.

Nate - Practice, practice, practice.  Then practice after that

Jess - Be present through each musical experience. Really enjoy it while you're in it. Make art you believe in. Breathe. Be open to learning more about yourself.

Jon - Great musicians are easy to find, great people who are great musicians aren't as easy.  Play with people you love, never forget to have fun. And practice your art, not your image.

Besides your own band - who do you want to see at the UMS?

Evan - Achille Lauro, Cowboy Indian Bear, DJ Savior Breath, Dragondeer, Fairchildren, Fierce Bad Rabbit, Glowing House, Holophrase, Ian Cooke, Land Lines, Paper Bird, Soundrabbit, The Changing Colors, The Swayback...  And whatever sounds good pouring out into the street.

Jon - Large numbers of attentive people loving our set and having fun.

Best past UMS experience?

John - We played the outdoor stage just as the sun was setting. It was a hot day, but the wind came up and made everything perfect. We played beautiful music to beautiful people on a beautiful evening. Perfect.

Jon - Playing a 45 minute set straight through in a beautiful church; it was transcendent.

Do you have any tips for festival goers?

John - Wear fire retardant suits, drink a lot, get ready for the rock apocalypse... the rockalypse.

Nate - Don't eat the brown acid

Jess - Drink water and prepare yourself for rock-ecstasy.

Jon - Seek out the underdogs, be open minded, support the artists you enjoy in any way you can.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?

John - Buy our last two CDs. Place 6 pieces of bacon between the CDs. Now eat the bacon while you listen to the CDs. This isn't totally edible, but it could feed you spiritually, emotionally and intellectually for years. We call this a "bacon rockwich."

John - The Inactivists

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?

John - I'm not gonna tell you what to do, man. Grow up and find your own music.

Evan - Ruby Vroom, Rubber Soul and The Wall.

Nate - My Bloody Valentine Loveless, 12 Rods' Lost Time, T. Rex The Slider

Jon - Love John's answer.  In case they weren't grown up, Miles Smiles by Miles Davis, Sky Blue Sky by Wilco, Shack Man by MMW. But more so, grow up and find your own music.

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?

John - "I Sleep With Danger." That will be my nickname during UMS.

Evan - There's more pavement than shade...  Remember to hydrate in between beer bongs.

Where and when are you playing at the UMS?

We are playing on Sunday July 22nd at 3 Kings Tavern (one of my favorite spots in Denver) at 4pm.

How long has your band been together?

The band began in late 2008 and I joined in the summer of 2010.

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?

My first show with Allout Helter was at 3 Kings, actually. It was memorable because we received a really positive response and we met DC Fallout, a rad band from California who we've been in a band romance with ever since.

What was the first album you purchased?

The first album I ever bought with my own money (allowance haha) was Nirvana's Nevermind on cassette. The tape finally snapped a few years ago while I was listening to it at my parent's house.

What album was your most recent purchase?

I picked up a copy of Random Orbits' 12" pressing of their EP and I picked up Stabbed in Back's 7" when we played with them last weekend.

Do you have any advice for new bands?

One: You've gotta hustle. Just because you talk to people on Facebook doesn't mean you're making fans. You have to support the other bands in the scene, hopefully because you like them anyway already. Two: Don't whine. Nobody likes people complaining that they don't get breaks or that they don't get why another band gets a show instead of them. Practice hard, book your own shows, be objective about your own material. If the songs are there, which is why we do this in the first place, then people will notice.

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?

Tin Horn Prayer, Hot Apostles, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Git Some, Minor Note Orchestra, Native Daughters. There's not a lot of punk at the UMS haha but I've got pretty broad tastes.

Best past UMS experience?

Last year was my fave out of the two years I've gone to so far. Fox and the Bird played an un-mic'd set in the middle of the dancefloor at the Rover when they encountered "sound difficulties"; it gave me chills. Also, closing out the showcase in a frenzy with Coverage absolutely slaying some Descendents was the perfect culmination to four days of awesomeness.

Do you have any tips for festival goers?

See as much music as you can. Make as many new friends as possible. Drink heavily, alternating with water, of course.

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?

I'm hoping that the sandwich cart guy shows up again; his gruyere and carmelized onion grilled cheese was the bomb last time! I'm also hoping that vegan truck makes an appearance. Otherwise, Karma makes amazing chinese food, gotta rock Famous for a quick slice. I'm gonna promote Swifts, also, because the lady who runs the place is super sweet.

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?

That's tough. I'd have to say Tin Horn Prayer still holds that spot for me. They're just so damned creative and their band is better than mine. Those jerks.

If you were behind the counter at Twist and Shout, what three albums would you recommend to our customers?

Also tough. If we're talking punk: Propagandhi - Today's Empire's, Tomorrow's Ashes, Bad Religion - Suffer, and Bouncing Souls - How I Spent My Summer Vacation. Anything else: The Slackers - Peculiar, The Band - The Last Waltz, and Oingo Boingo's double album live farewell concert. That shit will blow your mind.

The Meadowlark w/ Glowing House, Portamento, Tjutjuna.   The smell

The Offspring Smash. Oh the days when kids didn't need to try hard to find out about good music

Do you have any advice for new bands?

Get some peanut butter throw it in your backpack, hop in a shitty van, and don't change your pants till you get home

Atomic Mamma, We played with them in Boise and they killed it

Smilin with my people

Do you have any tips for festival goers?

Get some peanut butter and rub it on your face.  It works as sun block and a quick snack

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?

1st avn. Presbyterian Church, knock on the door and receive a free bagged lunch (Just make sure you dress like a hipster so they think you're homeless)

How long has your band been together?

about a year with the current lineup.

What was your band's first live show/ performance and what was memorable about it?

our first show with Mikael was a Halloween party at Babooshka on Colfax.  I wanted to be a zombie barbershop quartet, with four-part "brrrraaaaiiiinnnsss" harmonies... but we ended up just dressing like zombie cowboys instead.

What was the first album you purchased?

Barenaked Ladies Stunt.  this was before i really listened to music.  i think i had gotten the soundtrack to the movie Spawn as a gift before that, but that was the first cd i bought for myself.

What album was your most recent purchase?

I pre-ordered the new Ending People record, but i don't have it yet.  I bought Safe Boating Is No Accident's new EP at their release show.  i like it a lot.

The new ramona falls album. Saw them at the hi-dive, incredible.

Do you have any advice for new bands?

OWN IT!

Besides your own band- who do you want to see at the UMS?

Zebroids and a bunch of bands i haven't seen or heard before. 

Best past UMS experience?

Ideal Fathers' set in 2009 at the skylark.  our guitar amp blew up as soon as we started. it was raining pretty hard outside, so people stuck around while we were trying to figure out what to do, and eventually Red Light Driver saved us and let us use their amp.  we played a quick set with more energy than we ever played before.  then Boba Fett & The Americans showed up outside after we loaded out.  it was great.  Also, The Outfit's set at Rock The Cradle a couple years ago was pretty cool.  i broke my glasses earlier in the day and was borrowing a pair with the wrong prescription just so i could kind of see.  i remember lots of dancing, and stars hanging from the ceiling, and i found a pair of aviator sunglasses behind my bass amp when i dropped my borrowed glasses.  tons of fun.

Ya, rock the cradle was really fantastic. The energy that the UMS evokes is incredible.

Do you have any tips for festival goers?

and drink some water!

What's the best food people can find on Broadway during the festival?

there's probably gonna be a bunch of food trucks with good stuff.  of course, there's sputnik and el diablo and the hornet and socorro too...

Who is your all time favorite Denver band?

i'll say Black Black Ocean just because.  i like too many denver bands to pick a favorite.

The knew, they not only rock but have helped us in more ways than I can count.

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?

The UMS is largely volunteer operated so that they can pay all the proceeds to the bands.  That's pretty amazing considering the scope of the whole thing
